My name is Ashleigh Ferris and, like everyone else it seems, I thought 2016 was a bit rubbish.

Need I say more?

Personally, it wasn’t the worst of my 25 years on this planet, but it sure wasn’t the best. Pre-2016 I was an avid runner, having ran 7 marathons in the last few years and completing long runs almost every weekend. I loved nothing more than meeting up with friends on a sunny Sunday morning and clocking up the miles in Bushy Park. And then my friend and I were in a car accident on the motorway. Now I don’t want you to go feeling sorry for me, I’m only telling you this to get to the reason for this blog. It wasn’t the worst accident in the world – in fact it could have been a lot worse – but it has left me with a severe whiplash injury which feels most of the time like a dull ache in my lower back, and pain between my shoulder blades.

So that happened, and I couldn’t really run. I still get out there and do parkrun, and I’ve done two slow 10ks in the last 6 months, but it’s just not the same. Running fast or far seems to be the worst thing for it – and what’s most annoying is that most other exercise doesn’t seem to affect it! I’ve even been boxing!

And now it’s December. And I am fed up. I’ve put weight on, I’m missing out on time with my running chums, and I need a hobby. Trouble is, I’ve no idea what. And from there, trying 52 new things in 52 weeks was born…
